Q. How do you know if your horse has a biotin deficiency?
Q. Is too much biotin bad for horses?
It is recommended that horses consume a minimum of 20 mg of biotin per 500 kg bodyweight to promote optimal hoof health. Feeding rates up to 30 mg per day might be necessary for heavy horses.
Q. What does biotin and zinc do for horses?
Q. What does biotin do for a horse?
- Hoof Health: Biotin is most commonly associated with improving hoof quality. It helps promote the production of keratin, a key structural protein in the hoof wall. Horses with poor hoof quality, such as brittle, cracked, or slow-growing hooves, often benefit from biotin supplementation. It can take several months (around 6-9 months) to see significant improvement because hoof growth is slow.
- Coat and Skin Health: Biotin also contributes to a shiny, healthy coat. It supports the growth of strong hair and skin tissues, making it particularly useful for horses that have dull coats or skin issues.
- Energy Metabolism: As part of the B-vitamin complex, biotin plays a role in energy metabolism by helping convert nutrients (especially fats, carbohydrates, and proteins) into energy. This can help in overall horse health, but the effects are less directly noticeable compared to hoof and coat improvements.
Bio-Hoof® Care & Repair™
Active constituents: Each 20 g dose contains: BIOTIN 15 mg ZINC 270 mg CALCIUM 6 g Also contains SULPHUR
Formulated to provide the essential nutrients required for the growth and maintenance of healthy hooves. The growth of a strong resilient hoof wall depends on an adequate supply of the vitamin biotin and the minerals calcium, sulfur and zinc. An inadequate intake of the structural minerals, trace-minerals and biotin, results in loss of hoof strength and easily broken away, chipped or cracked hooves in all horses. Biotin plays an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Biotin is a sulfur-containing vitamin that is needed in the formation of the bones, hooves and the skin.
